<span class="center"><img src="images/logo.png" alt="Using the UT Libraries. A choose your own adventure game" /></span>
Welcome! So you'd like to learn more about using the UT Libraries. To help you succeed in your classes, we've created this choose-your-own-adventure style game to demonstrate the many ways you can navigate UT Libraries' resources and services.
Throughout the game, you'll be presented with options to guide your journey (links in green will move you through the game, links in blue will open to a new tab outside the game). The choices you make determine what library service or resource you interact with. This game should take no more than 20 minutes, although the length of time will vary with the choices you make.

[[For a non-native English speaker version, click here.|Start2]]It's time to begin your research assignment, and you're not sure where to start. Knowing how to navigate UT Libraries may seem overwhelming, so first things first:
[[I want to visit Hodges Library in-person.|Hodges]]
[[Let's start online.|Online]]You make your way to Hodges Library.
<img src="images/hodges.jpg" alt="Students walk past Hodges library" />
You head to the public services desk to ask for help.
[[Approach public services.]]
Starting out online sounds best to you right now. On the <span class="exlink">[[library's website|https://www.lib.utk.edu/]]</span>, you notice the green Chat With Us button, and decide to start there.
<img src="images/chatbutton.png" alt="Chat With Us logo" />
You enter your name and email, along with your question: "Hi! I'm looking for help on where to start with my research assignment. I have a topic in mind; I just don't know where or how to get started."
<<textbox "$name" "Enter name here">>
In a matter of seconds, you're connected, and you're surprised to see it's not a bot, but [[a librarian|Chat2]].
<img src="images/psdesk.jpg" alt="Hodges' public service desk with plexiglass barrier" />
"Hi! How can I help you today?"
You explain to the librarian that you've got your first research assignment, and you're not really sure where to start.
"Well, you've come to the right place! Do you already have a topic or question you're interested in?"
You nod, explaining the idea you've got for your paper.
"Excellent. And what was your name?"
<<textbox "$name" "Enter name here">>
[[You give the librarian your name.|Options]]"Well, $name, you've got two options to start with. The first is meeting with a librarian. You can either set up a virtual consultation, or you can go visit our research assistance desk in the Academic Success area of the North Commons just down the hall. There you can walk up and get some help."
They swing their computer screen around. "We also have a good selection of books on this topic. I could print out a map to these if you wanted to get started right away.
"Do you want to get started with one of these options?"
<<set $hasAppt to false>>
[[I'd like to set up a meeting.|Meeting]]
[[I'll just go visit the librarian now.|RAConsult]]
[[Searching for books would be a good place to start.|Map]]The librarian turns the screen around to show you the library's website.
<img src="images/gethelp2.png" alt="UT Libraries' home page with Get Help button circled in red" />
"Clicking the Get Help button anywhere on the website will get you to the right spot."
<img src="images/requestconsult.png" alt="Get Help page with Request Consultation circled in red" />
<span class="exlink">[[The librarian pulls up the form.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/askusnow/appointment/?_ga=2.151657145.1295933212.1598470399-656198069.1583936759]]</span>
"Great! $name, you're all set to meet with a librarian. Did you want to look over those books I found and see if any sound good to get you started?"
<<set $hasAppt to true>>
[[Sure, that'd be great!|Map]]
[[No, thanks; I'll wait for my consultation.|No]]You look at the list of books the librarian has pulled up and immediately see one that sounds like it will work for your assignment. The librarian clicks on a small blue button that brings up a map of the third floor.
<img src="images/mapitbutton.png" alt="Book record with MapIt button circled in red" />
They print the map and bring the paper over to you.
<img src="images/stackmap.png" alt="Map of a book with shelving row and call number circled in red" />
"Alright, these little orange boxes are the elevators, and the pin is where your book is. This shelving row label is like the street address for your book; they're posted on the end of every shelf.
"Once you find the right row, you follow this call number alphabetically, then numerically. Does that make sense?"
You nod, sure you'll be singing your ABCs soon.
"Great! Feel free to stop back by if you have any other questions!"
[[Leave the desk.|Find book]]You turn around and look at the library. A sign down the hall mentions the Studio; you remember a professor said something about them helping with alternative assignments.
[[Go check out the Studio.|Studio]]
[[Head home.|Head home]]You approach the desk at the Studio and ask the student working there what the Studio is, exactly.
"The Studio is a media production and design lab. We've got all kinds of cool things for students, faculty, and staff to check out! We've got a video production lab, audio recording rooms, a virtual reality room - tons of stuff that you can use. And it doesn't have to be for class."
"How much does it cost?" you ask.
"We do have to charge for the poster printing, but other than that, everything is covered by student fees, so you don't pay to use it. And if there's any kind of project you want to work on but you're not sure how to use the tech, we can help you out."
"That's awesome!"
"There are a lot of things to explore; I'd definitely recommend checking out the website to see it all."
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to visit the Studio's website to see all of the options available to you this semester.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/studio/]]</span>
As you walk out, you notice there are people using the study rooms.
[[Stop by public services and ask how to reserve one of the study rooms.|Study rooms]]
[[Check out your books and leave.|Self checkout]]"Hey, $name, I'm glad you found some books! How to book a study room? Sure, let me show you."
The librarian pulls up the library's website and turns the monitor to face you.
"See here, at the top, you can click on Spaces."
<img src="images/space1.png" alt="lib.utk.edu with Spaces link circled in red" />
"Then, you can filter to whether or not the room can be reserved, what type of space you're looking for - all kinds of things."
<span class="center"><img src="images/spaces.png" alt="Space page - see link below" /></span>
"Then, you click on the type of room you want and reserve from this link."
<img src="images/studyrooms.png" alt="Screenshot of Commons study room info with reservation link circled in red" />
"The study rooms can be reserved for two hour blocks, and depending on the time of the semester, they can fill up fast.
"Is there anything else I can help you with?"
[[No, thanks! I'm just going to checkout these books.|Self checkout]]Books ready, you approach the public services desk. You have the option of checking out with a librarian or using the self checkout kiosk. The librarian is already with someone, so you opt for self checkout.
<span class="center"><img src="images/selfcheckout.jpeg" alt="Self checkout kiosk in Hodges Library" /></span>
You follow the instructions to scan first your VolCard, then the books. When you're done, you print a receipt so you remember the due dates and [[leave|Head home]].You head toward the elevators and make your way to the third floor.
<img src="images/stacks.jpg" alt="Empty tables between shelves of books" />
Once in the stacks, it's actually pretty easy to follow the signage and map to find your book. Once you're there, you find a couple of others that look like they might work, too. You grab three and head back to the second floor.
Once there, you look around the Commons. Students are already working away at the computers and mobile whiteboards. You see a sign for the Studio - your professor mentioned it in class, in case you didn't want to write a paper for an upcoming assignment.
[[Go check out the Studio.|Studio]]
[[Go checkout your books.|Self checkout]]<<if $hasAppt is true>>You set up a research consultation with a librarian, and now it's time to [[log in|Zoom consult]].
<<elseif $hasAppt is false>>You didn't set up a virtual research consultation. Did you want to [[set one up now]] or [[get started on your own]]?
<</if>>You follow the Zoom link sent to your email address and are connected with a librarian. You explain your topic and what you've done so far.
"Awesome! You're off to a good start, $name. Are you familiar with OneSearch?"
[[Yes, I've used it before.|ASC]]
[[No, I haven't used it before.|OneSearch]]It doesn't take a lot of work to figure out how to set up a research consultation; you find the Get Help button on the library's home page and quickly set up an appointment.
<img src="images/requestconsult.png" alt="Get Help page with Request Consultation circled in red" />
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to be taken to the request consultation form.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/askusnow/appointment/?_ga=2.4532538.886588336.1598875267-625653380.1590709751]]</span>
[[You set up an appointment for tomorrow.|Zoom consult]]You've done some research before, so you're pretty confident you'll be able to navigate OneSearch and some of the databases. You know how to put a search string together, and you're feeling pretty good.
With one source left, you run into a dead-end; you can't find anything good, and you're not sure where else to go.
[[Let's schedule one of those live, virtual research consultations.|set one up now]]
[[Chat in to ask for help.|Chat]]"Okay, $name, let's give one of our databases a go." They show you how to get to a database called Academic Search Complete.
<img src="images/a&d.png" alt="Library homepage with Articles & Databases link circled in red" />
[[Click on Articles & Databases.|A&D]]
"Gotcha. It's a good place to start your search if you're not sure what's out there. OneSearch will look at books and articles, as well as other resources, that we have access to - it just won't search <em>all</em> of our resources. We can start here, and if we don't have enough sources, we can move on to a database.
"First, you want to put in your keywords. So, if you're looking at sports and whether college athletes should be paid, you might do: college AND athletes AND pay."
<img src="images/initialsearch.png" alt="OneSearch bar filled in with college AND athletes AND pay" />
"That's easier for the database to understand than a full sentence."
[[Enter keywords and search.|Filters2]]You've seen the chat button on almost every page of the library's website you've visited. You head to the main page and click the green Chat With Us button.
<img src="images/chatbutton.png" alt="Chat With Us logo" />
Almost instantly, a librarian responds.
"Hi, $name! What can I help you with today?"
You explain that you've been searching in OneSearch, and you've hit a dead end. The librarian asks what keywords you've been using, and agrees that they're good for your research question.
"Let's try out a database. Have you been to Academic Search Complete?"
[[No, I haven't.|ASC2]]
[[I have.|LibGuide]]
"Once you're there, you'll see it under Most Popular Databases. It's a multidisciplinary database, which means it'll search a lot of topics in one place. Unlike OneSearch, though, it searches primarily journal articles, so you'll get more relevant results if that's what you're looking for."
<span class="center"><img src="images/asc.png" alt="Screenshot with Academic Search Complete circled in red" /></span>
"That's a lot of steps to remember, so here's the link to the library's tutorials page. We've got a couple of different ones, including one for this database."
<span class="exlink">[[Open the tutorial.|https://utk.libwizard.com/id/0046dc1e96916af20912ce79f1aec1fd]]</span>
"Do you feel good about searching here, or would you like me to show you one other resource?"
[[Another resource would be good.|LibGuide]]
[[I need to include at least two primary sources - how do I find those?|Primary sources]]
[[I need at least one book source; can you help?|Book]]
[[I think I've got it.|Workshops]]"Awesome. We have these resources called LibGuides, which can be a great place to start if you're not sure what database to go to. They're organized by class or topic, and have all kinds of great information. Here's the first-year composition LibGuide as an example."
<span class="exlink">[[Click the link the librarian put in chat.|https://libguides.utk.edu/FYC]]</span>
"We also have live Zoom workshops this semester. We take 30 minutes to talk about a part of the research process, like how to put together a good search, or where to go for primary sources. They're recorded, too, so you can watch ones that have already happened."
<span class="exlink">[[Click the link to the workshops and registration information.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/instruct/firstyear/]]</span>
[[Thanks! I feel really good about this assignment.|Wrap-up]]"Oh, I love searching for primary sources - they can be frustrating to find, but also super cool. We have a couple of different options I can show you.
"First, we have a primary source guide that's incredibly helpful."
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to visit the primary source guide.|https://libguides.utk.edu/primarysources]]</span>
"We also have our Special Collections, which has an awesome digital collection full of primary sources."

"If you're interested in more specific primary sources, like cookbooks or musical scores, our branch libraries, Pendergrass and Music, can definitely help you out. Let me get you the links to their websites; you can browse around, or chat in to ask their librarians questions."
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to visit Pendergrass's website,|https://www.lib.utk.edu/agvet/]] and [[here to visit our Music Library's website.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/music/]]</span>
"Well, $name, how do you feel about what we've found so far?"
[[Another resource would be good.|LibGuide]]
[[I think I've got it, but I'm glad to have those tutorial links.|Workshops]]
"Oh, no problem! You've got a couple of options. You could start in OneSearch; let's put in your keywords."
<img src="images/initialsearch.png" alt="OneSearch bar with college AND athletes AND pay" />
"From there, you can use the filters on the side to limit to books - physical or digital, or both, whatever works best for you."
<img src="images/filters.png" alt="Screenshot of filters with Books - physical and Books - Electronic checked" />
[[Following the librarian, you check the filters.|Book 2]]"I'm glad we were able to get you on the right track, $name! Before we go, I wanted to tell you about our workshops. They're only half an hour on Zoom, and each one talks about a different part of the research process, like how to put together a good search or where to go to primary sources. They're recorded, too, in case you want to watch ones that have already happened."
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to see registration information and recordings.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/instruct/firstyear/]]</span>
"They're super low-key, and there's time to work on your assignment after if you want someone on stand-by in case you have any questions.
"Is there anything else I can help you with for this assignment?"
[[No, this is great!|Wrap-up]]"Physical books are going to have this blue MapIt button; if you come into Hodges, you can use that to find your book in the stacks."
<img src="images/mapit.png" alt="Book result with MapIt button circled in red" />
"We also have tons of ebooks. For those, just scroll down to View Online and click the link under it. Even though they're electronic, they still count as a book source."
<img src="images/ebook.png" alt="ebook record with database link circled in red" />
"Now $name, I know that's a <em>lot</em> to remember, so here's the tutorial for finding books if you need it later."
<span class="exlink">[[Click to open the tutorial.|https://libguides.utk.edu/tutorials?_ga=2.259491210.1488048768.1597060495-625653380.1590709751]]</span>

"Are you getting some good results, $name, or do you want to try a database?"
[[I'd like to try a database.|ASC]]
[[I need to include at least two primary sources - how do I find those?|Primary sources]]
[[I'm good looking through these, thanks.|Workshops]]The librarian explains that a database like Academic Search Complete is a good next step from OneSearch. They guide you from the homepage - first, to Articles & Databases.
<img src="images/a&d.png" alt="Articles & Databases link circled in red" />
Then, to Most Popular Databases.
<img src="images/asc.png" alt="Most Popular Databases, with Academic Search Complete circled in red" />
[[You follow the librarian's instructions to the database.|ASC3]]Using the keywords you've brainstormed, the librarian shows you how to use the filters to get the best results.
<img src="images/ascresults.png" alt="Results page with Relevance filter and Peer-Reviewed Journal filter selected" />
"Those are a lot of steps to remember, so here's the link to the tutorial in case you ever need a refresher." The librarian <span class="exlink">[[drops the link in chat.|https://utk.libwizard.com/id/0046dc1e96916af20912ce79f1aec1fd]]</span>

[[Another resource would be good.|LibGuide]]
[[I'm good looking here, thanks.|Wrap-up]]"Hello, $name! Of course - I'd be glad to help you get started!"
They ask about your topic and together, you figure out some keywords to start your search.
"Have you used OneSearch before?"
[[No - what's that?|OneSearch2]]
[[Yes, I haven't had any luck there.|Database]]"Cool! OneSearch is a good place to start if you're not sure what's out there for a topic. It searches a lot of what the library has access to - books, articles, documentaries, etc. - but not <em>all</em> of it.
"But let's get started! On the library's homepage, you'll see the search bar at the top. Just put your keywords in there. If you're looking at sports and whether college athletes should be paid, you might enter: college AND athletes AND pay."
<img src="images/initialsearch.png" alt="OneSearch bar with college AND athletes AND pay" />
[[Enter keywords.|OneSearch3]]"No worries - let's check out a database, then," the librarian responds. They show you how to get to a database called Academic Search Complete. "It's a good place to get started searching for journal articles," they explain.
Using the keywords you've brainstormed, they show you how to enter a search string, then how to use the filters to get the best results.
<img src="images/ascresults.png" alt="Search results from Academic Search Complete, with Relevance and Peer Reviewed filters circled in red" />

[[Can we try a database?|ASC_O]]
[[I think I'm good for now, thanks.|Phase1]]"Sure! Let's go back to the library's homepage, then click on the link called Articles & Databases."

[[Thanks for your help! Have a good day.|Request consultation]]You see a totally different website, but some of the features look similar.
"$name, have you made it to Academic Search Complete? Good.
"It's similar to OneSearch, in that we'll just put your keywords in the search bar. You can use the filters on the right to limit languages or to peer reviewed journals, and always remember to set it to display results by relevance."
<img src="images/ascresults.png" alt="Results page of Academic Search Complete with Relevance and Peer Reviewed Journals circled in red" />
"There are a lot of steps to remember, so here's the link to the tutorial for this database."

"Do you feel good searching here, $name, or would you like me to show you one other resource?"
[[I actually have to have one book source for this paper - how do I get access to those online?|Book_O]]
[[I think I'm good for now, thanks.|Phase1]]"Oh, sure! There are a lot of great options for books online. Let's start with OneSearch, first. Do you want me to start a screenshare, so you can see what I'm doing as I search?"
[[That'd be great.|Start share]]
[[No, I'm okay following along, thanks.|No screenshare]]"Great! Give me one sec..."
A prompt appears asking you to join a screensharing session, and a Zoom window pops up. You can see the librarian's screen, which is on the library's homepage.
"Hey, $name! You don't have to turn on your camera; I thought this might be an easier way to show you what I'm doing."
They navigate to the OneSearch bar at the top of the page, then enter your keywords.
<img src="images/initialsearch.png" alt="OneSearch bar with college AND athletes AND pay" />
[[Follow along on your computer.|Share2]]"No problem. For books, you'll want to use OneSearch. I put in the keywords we used earlier, and started the search.
"From there, I'll head over to the left-hand side where you can see the filters. Under Format, I can select Books - Electronic. This will give me book results you can access online."
<span class="center"><img src="images/filters3.png" alt="Format filters with Books Electronic checked" /></span>
[[You follow along, filtering your search to ebooks.|ebooks2]]Your screen and the librarian's look the same after hitting search.
<img src="images/filters3.png" alt="Format filters set to Books - Electronic" />
"Now that I'm on the results page, I can go over to the filters and filter to Books - Electronic. Just click on the title, and scroll down to the View Online section."
<img src="images/ebook.png" alt="Book result with access link circled in red" />
You watch the librarian's cursor pass over the book's record until it hovers over the link.
"This is the database where the book lives - click on that, and it will open for you. I know some students aren't sure about using ebooks as book resources, but they totally count. Does that make sense?"
[[It does - thanks!|Physical books]]
[[That was a lot of steps; I don't know that I'll remember them all.|Book tutorial]]"Fair enough! Here, I'll drop a link in the chat to our tutorial for finding books. You can save it for later in case you need it."
<span class="exlink">[[Open the link.|https://utk.libwizard.com/id/5d266fa7b45974295e2e2f85244f56ae]]</span>
"Now, do you think this is a good place to start your search?"
[[This is plenty to start with, thanks.|Phase1]]
[[What if the book I want is in the library?|Physical books]]"Alright, so what to do if the book you want is at the library, but not online.
"Let's start with the scenario where UT Libraries has the physical book. You've found it in OneSearch, but there's no online option. You can always come into the library and pick up the book; you can use that blue MapIt button to find where it is in the stacks.
"If you just need some chapters, you can request a PDF scan of those. You can't request the whole book, and this process does take some time. You won't want to wait till the last minute to use this option; this is <em>definitely</em> only if you're requesting things at least a couple of days before you need them."
<img src="images/requestpdf.png" alt="Screenshot of book record with 'PDF scan' circled in red" />
"You have to be signed in to OneSearch to see this option."
[[But what if the library doesn't have the book or article I want?|ILS]]"That's a great question. The second option is to request a PDF scan through something called InterLibrary Loan. Again, they can't send you scans of a whole book, but they can send you scans of articles and book chapters."
<img src="images/ils.png" alt="Screenshot of InterLibrary Loan's website" />
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to see the InterLibrary Loan's website.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/ils/]]</span>
"Just chat in if you think it's something we don't have; a librarian can double check, then walk you through how to request it."
[[Awesome - thanks for your help!|Phase1]]Using what the librarian showed you during your chat session, you're able to get most of your sources put together.
Nearing the end of your assignment, you realize two of the sources you found earlier won't work with how your research question is playing out. You need to replace them, but you feel like you've exhausted all of your options. Then you remember the librarian telling you about the research consultations.
<img src="images/requestconsult.png" alt="Get Help page with Request Consultation button circled in red" />
[[You set one up.|Log in]]There are more results than you were expecting!
"With Books - Electronic, it looks like you'll have a lot to choose from. Just click on the title of a book that looks good, and scroll down to the View Online section. Click on one of the links, like ProQuest Ebook Central, and it will take you to the book. You can read the summary and browse chapter titles to make sure it's a good fit."
<img src="images/ebook.png" alt="ebook record with database link circled in red" />
"This is great - thanks!" you type.
"Wonderful. Do you feel like you're in a good place, $name?"
[[What if I find a resource that I can't get access to?|Physical books]]
[[That was a lot of steps to remember.|Book tutorial]]
[[I feel pretty good, thanks!|Phase1]]Time comes to log in for your research consultation; you follow the Zoom link and are connected with a librarian. You explain your topic and what you've done so far.
"Awesome! You're off to a good start, $name. It sounds like you might need to try a different database. Have you ever used a LibGuide before?"
[[No.|LibGuide_O]]
[[It's been a while.|LibGuide_O]]"Excellent. Let's take a look at one I think might be helpful for your assignment.
"At UT Libraries, we have a librarian who specializes in every subject, and one of the things they do is build these LibGuides for different topics or classes. They pull together all of their favorite and most reliable resources in one place to make searching easier. Here, let me drop this link in the chat for you."
<span class="exlink">[[Open the link.|https://libguides.utk.edu/FYC]]</span>
"This is the LibGuide for First-Year Composition. The liaison to that program, Charissa, has put together resources to help with some of the common topics that first-year comp students write about. Each resource has a description so you can look for one that fits your needs."
The librarian takes you on a tour of the LibGuide, and you find a couple of databases that you're sure will get you the sources you need.
"It looks like we've got you all set! Do you have any other questions I can help you with today, $name?"
[[Yeah; my professor mentioned that we could do a podcast for our next assignment, and that the library could help.|Studio_O]]
[[I need at least two primary sources for this assignment - can you show me how to find those?|Primary_O]]
[[No, this is perfect!|Wrap-Up_O]]"Oh, I love searching for primary sources - they can be frustrating to find sometimes, but also super cool. We have a couple of different options I can walk you through.
"So, on the first LibGuide I showed you, there was a small section for primary sources, but we have an even larger one available."
<span class="exlink">[[They share the link in chat.|https://libguides.utk.edu/primarysources]]</span>
"Our Special Collections has an awesome digital collection full of primary sources; here's the link to that page."

"Now, if you're interested in more specific primary sources, like cookbooks or musical scores, our branch libraries, Pendergrass and Music, can definitely help you out there. Let me get you the links to their websites; you can browse around, or you can chat in to ask their librarians questions."
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to visit Pendergrass's website|https://www.lib.utk.edu/agvet/]] and [[here for the Music Library.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/music/]]</span>
"How do you feel about looking through these?"
[[Good! But my professor mentioned something about the library helping with podcasts?|Studio_O]]
[[Great, this is perfect!|Wrap-Up_O]]"I'm so glad! It was nice to meet you with today, $name - feel free to chat back in if you have any questions, or you can always schedule another consultation.
"Before you go, let me tell you about our workshops. We've got a series where we take 30 minutes on Zoom to talk about things like how to put together a good search, or where to go for primary sources. They're recorded, too, so even if you've missed one, you can still watch it.
"They're super low-key, and there's time to work on your assignment after if you want to have someone on stand-by in case you have any questions. Here's the link to sign up if any look interesting."
<span class="exlink">[[Open workshop schedule.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/instruct/firstyear/]]</span>
You thank the librarian and log out. [[Finish your research.]]The librarian smiles.
"We can definitely help with that! We've got a resource called the Studio, where they help with all kinds of multimedia projects. They have recording studios, audio editing equipment, and really knowledgeable people to help you out. Here, let me drop you a link to their page."
<span class="exlink">[[Open the link.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/studio/]]</span>
The librarian waits for you to open it, then guides you around the Studio site.
<img src="images/studio.png" alt="Screenshot of the Studio website" />
"Is there anything else I can help you with today?"
[[No, this is great, thanks.|Wrap-Up_O]]It is time to begin your research assignment, and you are not sure where to start. UT Libraries is filled with professionals who know how to do research, but knowing how to navigate these free resources may seem overwhelming. How would you like to start?
[[I want to visit Hodges Library in-person.|Hodges2]]
[[I want to start online.|NNES_Online]]You make your way to Hodges Library.
<img src="images/hodges.jpg" alt="Students walk past Hodges library" />
You head to the public services desk to ask for help.
[[Approach public services.|Approach public services.2]]
You would prefer to start your research for this assignment online. On the <span class="exlink">[[library's website|https://www.lib.utk.edu/]]</span>, you notice the green Chat With Us button, and decide to start there.
<img src="images/chatbutton.png" alt="Chat With Us logo" />
You enter your name and email, along with your question: "Hello, I am looking for help on where to start with my research assignment. I have a topic in mind; I just do not know where or how to get started."
<<textbox "$name" "Enter name here">>
Quickly, you are connected, and you are surprised to see it is not a bot, but [[a librarian|Chat_nnes]].
<img src="images/psdesk.jpg" alt="Hodges' public service desk with plexiglass barrier" />
"Hello! How can I help you today?"
You explain to the librarian that you have your first research assignment, and you are not really sure where to start.
"You have come to the right place! Do you already have a topic or question you are interested in?"
You nod, explaining the idea you have for your paper.
"Excellent. And what was your name?"
<<textbox "$name" "Enter name here">>
[[You give the librarian your name.|Options2]]"Well, $name, you have two options to start with. The first is meeting with a librarian. You can either set up a virtual consultation on Zoom, or you can go visit our research assistance desk in the Academic Success area of the North Commons just down the hall. There you can walk up and get some help."
They show you their computer screen. "We also have many books on this topic. I could print out a map to these if you wanted to get started right away.
"Do you want to get started with one of these options?"
<<set $hasAppt to false>>
[[I would like to meet with a librarian on Zoom.|Meeting2]]
[[I will walk down to see a librarian now.|RAConsult2]]
[[I would like to look for a book.|Map2]]The librarian shows you the library's website.
<img src="images/gethelp2.png" alt="UT Libraries' home page with Get Help button circled in red" />
"Clicking the Get Help button anywhere on the website will let you request an appointment."

<span class="exlink">[[The librarian pulls up the form.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/askusnow/appointment/?_ga=2.151657145.1295933212.1598470399-656198069.1583936759]]</span>
"Great! $name, you are all set to meet with a librarian. Did you want to look over those books I found and see if any sound good to get you started?"
<<set $hasAppt to true>>
[[Yes, please.|Map2]]
[[No, thank you; I will wait for my consultation.|No2]]You look at the list of books the librarian has pulled up and see one that sounds like it will work for your assignment.
"These little orange boxes are the elevators, and the pin is where your book is. This shelving row label is like the street address for your book; they are posted on the end of every shelf.
"Once you find the right row, you follow this call number alphabetically, then numerically. Does that make sense?"
You nod.
"Great! Please come back if you have any other questions!"
[[Leave the desk.|Find book2]]You turn around and look at the library. A sign down the hall mentions the Studio; you remember a professor said something about them helping with alternative assignments.
[[Go check out the Studio.|Studio2]]
[[Head home.|Head home2]]You make your way to the third floor.
<img src="images/stacks.jpg" alt="Empty tables between shelves of books" />
Once in the stacks, it is easy to follow the signage and map to find your book. Once you are there, you find a couple of others that look like they might work, too. You grab three and head back to the second floor.
Once there, you look around the Commons. Students are already working at the computers and mobile whiteboards. You see a sign for the Studio - your professor mentioned it in class, in case you did not want to write a paper for an upcoming assignment.
[[Go check out the Studio.|Studio2]]
[[Go checkout, or borrow, your books.|Self checkout2]]You approach the desk at the Studio and ask the student working there what the Studio is, exactly.
"The Studio is a media production and design lab. We have all kinds of cool things for students, faculty, and staff to check out! We have a video production lab, audio recording rooms, a virtual reality room - tons of stuff that you can use. And it does not have to be for class."
"How much does it cost?" you ask.
"We do have to charge for the poster printing, but other than that, everything is covered by student fees, so you do not pay to use it. And if there is any kind of project you want to work on but you are not sure how to use the technology, we can help you out."
"Excellent!"
"There are a lot of things to explore; I would definitely recommend checking out the website to see it all."
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to visit the Studio's website to see all of the options available to you this semester.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/studio/]]</span>
As you walk out, you notice there are people using the study rooms.
[[Ask a librarian how to reserve one of the study rooms.|Study rooms2]]
[[Check out, or borrow, your books and leave.|Self checkout2]]<<if $hasAppt is true>>You set up a research consultation with a librarian, and now it is time to [[log in|Zoom consult2]].
<<elseif $hasAppt is false>>You did not set up an research consultation. Did you want to [[set one up now|set one up now2]] or [[get started on your own|get started on your own2]]?
<</if>>Books ready, you approach the public services desk. You have the option of checking out with a librarian or using the self checkout kiosk. The librarian is already with someone, so you opt for self checkout.
<span class="center"><img src="images/selfcheckout.jpeg" alt="Self checkout kiosk in Hodges Library" /></span>
You approach the machine and follow the instructions to scan your VolCard, then the books. When you are done, you print a receipt so you remember the due dates and [[leave|Head home2]]."Hello, $name, I am glad you found some books! Let me show you how to reserve a study room."
"The study rooms can only be reserved for two hours in a single day, and depending on the time of the semester, they can fill up quickly.
"Is there anything else I can help you with?"
[[No. I am going to checkout, or borrow, these books.|Self checkout2]]You follow the Zoom link sent to your email address and are connected with a librarian. You explain your topic and what you have done so far.
"You are off to a good start, $name. Are you familiar with OneSearch?"
[[Yes, I have used it before.|ASC2.0]]

[[Click on Articles & Databases.|A&D2]]
"It is a good place to start your search if you are not sure what research is available. OneSearch will look at books and articles, as well as other resources, that we have access to - it just will not search <em>all</em> of our resources. We can start here, and if we do not have enough sources, we can move on to a database.
"First, put in your keywords. So, if you are looking at sports and whether college athletes should be paid, you might do: college AND athletes AND pay."
<img src="images/initialsearch.png" alt="OneSearch bar filled in with college AND athletes AND pay" />
"That is easier for the database to understand than a full sentence."
[[Enter keywords and search.|Filters_nnes]]You have seen the chat button on almost every page of the library's website you have visited. You go to the main page and click the green Chat With Us button.
<img src="images/chatbutton.png" alt="Chat With Us logo" />
Very quickly, a librarian responds.
"Hello, $name! What can I help you with today?"
You explain that you have been searching in OneSearch, and cannot find any more sources for your assignment. The librarian asks what keywords you have been using, and agrees that they are good for your research question.
"We should search in a database. Have you been to Academic Search Complete?"
[[No.|ASC2_nnes]]
[[I have.|LibGuide2]]
"Once you are there, you will see it under Most Popular Databases. It is a multidisciplinary database, which means it will search a lot of topics in one place. Unlike OneSearch, though, it searches mostly journal articles, so you will get more relevant results if that is what you are looking for."
<span class="center"><img src="images/asc.png" alt="Screenshot with Academic Search Complete circled in red" /></span>

"If you just need some chapters, you can request a PDF scan of those. You cannot request the whole book, and this process does take some time. You will not want to wait till the last minute to use this option; this is <em>definitely</em> only if you are requesting things at least a couple of days before you need them."
<img src="images/requestpdf.png" alt="Screenshot of book record with 'PDF scan' circled in red" />
"You have to be signed in to OneSearch to see this option."
[[What if the library does not have the book or article I want?|ILS2]]"I will put a link in the chat to our tutorial for finding books. You can save it for later in case you need it."
<span class="exlink">[[Open the link.|https://utk.libwizard.com/id/5d266fa7b45974295e2e2f85244f56ae]]</span>
"Now, do you think this is a good place to start your search?"
[[This is plenty to start with, thank you.|Phase1.2]]
[[What if the book I want is in the library?|Physical books2]]"That is a great question. The second option is to request a PDF scan through something called InterLibrary Loan. Again, they cannot send you scans of a whole book, but they can send you scans of articles and book chapters."
<img src="images/ils.png" alt="Screenshot of InterLibrary Loan's website" />
<span class="exlink">[[Click here to see the InterLibrary Loan's website.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/ils/]]</span>
"Just chat in to UT Libraries if you think it is something we do not have; a librarian can double check, then walk you through how to request it."
[[Thank you for your help.|Phase1.2]]"With Books - Electronic, it looks like you will have a lot to choose from. Just click on the title of a book that looks appropriate for your research, and scroll down to the View Online section. Click on one of the links, like ProQuest Ebook Central, and it will take you to the book. You can read the summary and browse chapter titles to make sure it is good for your topic."
<img src="images/ebook.png" alt="ebook record with database link circled in red" />
"This is great - thank you!" you type.
"Wonderful. Do you feel like you are in a good place to research on your own, $name?"
[[What if I find a resource that I cannot get access to?|Physical books2]]
[[That was a lot of steps to remember.|Book tutorial2]]
[[I feel pretty good, thanks!|Phase1.2]]Using what the librarian showed you during your chat session, you are able to get most of your sources put together.
Nearing the end of your assignment, you realize two of the sources you found earlier will not work with how your research question is developing. You need to replace them, but you feel like you have exhausted all of your options. Then you remember the librarian telling you about the research consultations.
<img src="images/requestconsult.png" alt="Get Help page with Request Consultation button circled in red" />
[[You set one up.|Log in2]]Time comes to log in for your research consultation; you follow the Zoom link and are connected with a librarian. You explain your topic and what you have done so far.
"It sounds like you might need to try a different database. Have you ever used a LibGuide before?"
[[No.|LibGuide_O2]]
[[It has been a while.|LibGuide_O2]]"Excellent. Let us take a look at one I think might be helpful for your assignment.
"At UT Libraries, we have a librarian who specializes in every subject, and one of the things they do is build these LibGuides for different topics or classes. They pull together all of their favorite and most reliable resources in one place to make searching easier. Here, let me give you this link in the chat."
The librarian takes you on a tour of the LibGuide, and you find a couple of databases that you are sure will get you the sources you need.
"It looks like we have found your sources. Do you have any other questions I can help you with today, $name?"
[[Yes; my professor mentioned that we could do a podcast for our next assignment, and that the library could help.|Studio_O2]]
[[I need at least two primary sources for this assignment - can you show me how to find those?|Primary_O2]]
[[No, this is perfect!|Wrap-Up_O2]]The librarian smiles.
"We can help with that! We have a resource called the Studio, where they help with all kinds of multimedia projects. They have recording studios, audio editing equipment, and really knowledgeable people to help you out. Here, let me give you a link to their page."
<span class="exlink">[[Open the link.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/studio/]]</span>
The librarian waits for you to open it, then guides you around the Studio site.
<img src="images/studio.png" alt="Screenshot of the Studio website" />
"Is there anything else I can help you with today?"
[[No, this is great, thank you.|Wrap-Up_O2]]"Primary sources can be frustrating to find sometimes, but also very cool. We have a couple of different options I can walk you through.
"So, on the first LibGuide I showed you, there was a small section for primary sources, but we have an even larger one available."
<span class="exlink">[[They share the link in chat.|https://libguides.utk.edu/primarysources]]</span>
"Our Special Collections has a digital collection full of primary sources; here is the link to that page."
<span class="exlink">[[Open link to digital collections.|https://digital.lib.utk.edu/?_ga=2.57992874.1488048768.1597060495-625653380.1590709751]]</span>
"If you are interested in more specific primary sources, like cookbooks or musical scores, our branch libraries, Pendergrass and Music, can help you.
[[Good! But my professor mentioned something about the library helping with podcasts?|Studio_O2]]
[[Great, this is perfect!|Wrap-Up_O2]]"I am so glad! It was nice to meet you with today, $name - please chat back in if you have any questions, or you can always schedule another consultation.
"Before you go, let me send you this flyer for our library workshops. We take 30 minutes to talk about things like how to put together a good search, or where to go for primary sources. They are recorded, too, so even if you have missed one, you can still watch it.
"They are informal, and there is time to work on your assignment after if you want to have a librarian there in case you have any questions. Here is the link to sign up if any look interesting."
<span class="exlink">[[Open workshop schedule.|https://www.lib.utk.edu/instruct/firstyear/]]</span>
You thank the librarian and log out. [[Finish your research.]]You head down the hall to the North Commons and easily find the research assistance desk. A librarian is available to help with your assignment.
Together you put together a search strategy based on your topic; they help you pick some keywords and even help you find a couple of academic articles to get started.
"Well, $name, this sounds like you're off to a really great start! Would you like some help finding some books, too, while you're here?"
